The history of Lawrence Park West is closely tied to that of Lawrence Park. William Van Duzer Lawrence wanted to create a community for artists and other creative people who would move from New York and would live together in a country atmosphere. He reportedly used the backdrop of the Barbizon in the Fontainebleau Forest in France as his model. He began to plan and build, with the help of his friend and architect William A. Bates in the late 1800's. Transforming the farmland to his vision of home sites and street layouts was difficult and he did not complete his utopian village until many years later. In 1980, Lawrence Park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After the turn of the twentieth century he decided to extend his village to include the nearby property that he owned in Yonkers. He called it Lawrence Park West. In 1917, Lawrence built his family home in the Yonkers neighborhood. The mansion that he called Westlands now serves as the administration building for Sarah Lawrence College, which Lawrence founded.

Lawrence Park shares a post office and zip code with the Village of Bronxville, but it is actually located in Yonkers. Lawrence Park West is strictly a residential community, with no commercial buildings. Tall mature trees that line the roadways form a canopy and shade most of it's streets. Set back from the roads and hidden between those trees are sprawling Tudors, Victorians and colonials with landscaped lawns, often with well-tended flower gardens.

One of the advantages of Lawrence Park West is the size of the lots upon which homes were built in the 1920's and 1930's. It is located only minutes from Bronxville's downtown section.
